General description
Founded in 1907, St. Pauls Winery for generations has aimed at producing wines with clear identities that highlight the uniqueness of our terroirs. The vineyards around St. Pauls distinguish themselves through different exposures, altitudes (300 to 700 metres above sea level), and soil compositions.
Each grape variety is able to find its perfect site among porphyry, clay, sand, loess, moraine residues and dolomite rocks dropped from Gantkofel, a vertical scarp towering behind St. Pauls. The grapes pick up on the elements contained in these different soils and pass them on to the wines. These turn out very fruity, succulent, full of strength and intrigue with their complexity and elegance.
The vigorous sun provides for perfectly ripened fruits, the cool fall winds from the mountains cause substantial temperature fluctuations during the maturation period that help to maintain the acidity. This results in high quality grapes that are picked by hand, according to old tradition – the best prerequisite for excellent quality.
